Sylvia Elkshoulder
(Nein-Nheh) came
into this world on
August 29, 1923 to
Henry Walking Calf
Elkshoulder and
Bessie Wandering
Medicine Elkshoulder
at Birney, Montana.
She had several
siblings however
just herself and her
younger brother
George Elkshoulder,
Sr. survived the
harsh conditions of
early Reservation
life.
Sylvia never
married. Besides
taking care of her
mother, she also
raised her niece
Ruby Tallwhiteman
and helped care for
her nephews whom she
loved as her own
sons. She became a
very caring
grandmother to many
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
It will never be
forgotten from
everyone that came
to know her as a
mother to all.
Sylvia’s next love
was the Cheyenne
culture which she
practiced to the
very end of her life
here, especially the
Cheyenne customary
relationship of a
brother and sister.
She was well known
for her beadwork,
hide tanning and
cooking Cheyenne
style traditional
foods which was
complimented by her
hospitality to
everyone. She and
her mother passed on
their talent and
skills in these
crafts to relatives
which will be
carried on. One of
many ways that will
be long remembered
by those that
benefited from her
unselfish attitude
of patience in
passing on Cheyenne
ways of life.
Sylvia’s
friendliness to all
those that her life
touched are
unsurpassed and will
be greatly missed by
everyone.
Sylvia always
respected all her
relatives, her
friends and those
that came in contact
with the Elkshoulder
family in the
Cheyenne traditional
way. Many of these
people, although not
specifically named
here feel that
heartfelt farewell
to Sylvia and that
she has truly earned
a long and final
rest with all the
ones that have
returned to the
origins of life as
we all know it.
Auntie, journey well
and you will stay
forever in our
hearts.
